How do I get in?

Public Relations (PR) is an increasingly popular career choice and competition to enter the sector is becoming fiercer. It is now mostly graduates that get pr positions. There are specialised degree courses available but to keep your options open it may be better to study one of the more traditional degrees. It is still possible to get into PR as a non-graduate but you will need some qualifications, A-levels, NVQs or GCSEs, to help you get your foot in the door. Work experience or work shadowing shows commitment and enthusiasm and is a good way of making contacts for the future.

What Jobs in Glasgow could I do?

In-house commercial PR - this involves working for a private company promoting the products but primarily the image of the company. You could work in the City, the financial services sector, for a commercial company or retailer

In-house public sector PR - this means promoting the image and services provided by the public sector, be it the government, the NHS, local government, educational bodies or charities. The press officer writes press releases putting a positive spin on any news and sends these to newspapers

PR consultancy work - there are hundreds of agencies specialising in PR work. They may handle the PR for a company by contract or on a one-off basis in a time of crisis

International PR - this involves promotion of international companies and organisations, including governments, often using foreign languages. As business becomes more global this sector looks set to grow.

Salaries in PR are fairly high. A PR Officer (the starting position) in the public sector can earn £22,000 and a Head of Communications can earn around £37,000. Figures are higher in the private sector with a PR Officer earning £23,000 and the Head of Communications earning around £52,000 or more.
